Festival Overview

The NC Oyster Festival has roots going back to late October 1978, when Ocean Isle Beach hosted its first oyster roast at the local airport. What started as a small coastal celebration with 150 pounds of oysters, 50 cooks, and a 50-cent entry fee has grown into one of the largest festivals on the North Carolina coast, drawing more than 45,000 visitors each year.

Hosted by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce, the festival celebrates the food, culture, and coastal traditions that have defined this stretch of the Carolina coastline for generations. Today, the weekend features live music all day long, local artisan vendors, family-friendly activities, and the competitive events that keep people coming back year after year.

At 5:45 PM, the opening ceremony begins with a flag-raising, the Honor Guard, and the National Anthem, followed by a ribbon-cutting from the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce and the unveiling of the official 2026 festival t-shirt and festival print by artist Keith White.

The night wraps up with a free outdoor concert by Carolina Beach Music Award winners The Sea-Cruz Band. It’s a low-key, local way to ease into the weekend — and it won’t cost you a thing.

Live Music

No festival is complete without hip swinging, toe tapping live music, and the NC Oyster Festival is loaded with it! This year, the festival features five different acts, all of which bring a different genre. From R&B to Country, and everything in between. If you love live music, you’ll love the NC Oyster Festival. One of our favorite acts is the Embers who play that unique Carolina Beach music that means so much to us here on the coast. Never heard of Beach Music? Frequently Asked Questions

Is the NC Oyster Festival good for kids?

Absolutely. Admission is free for children 12 and under, and the festival is easy for families to navigate. The Friday night kick-off is a particularly relaxed option if you want to introduce little ones to the event before the weekend crowds arrive.

Do I need to buy tickets in advance, or can I pay at the gate?

Tickets are available at the gate. Adult admission is $5 cash — no cards accepted — so make sure you have bills on hand before you arrive. If you’re planning to do the Oyster Stew Cook-Off tasting on Sunday, those tickets ($5 each, limited to 350) are a separate purchase and go quickly, so arrive early.

What’s the best time of day to arrive to avoid the biggest crowds?

Arrive before 11 AM or after 2 PM. Traffic onto Ocean Isle Beach peaks between those hours on festival weekend, which also means longer shuttle waits from the parking lots. Early Saturday morning is the sweet spot — you’ll catch The Caroline Keller Band, have first pick of vendor booths, and beat the midday rush.

What should I bring to the festival?

Cash (for admission, food, and vendors), a lawn chair or blanket for the music, comfortable shoes, and sunscreen. Outside food, beverages, coolers, alcohol, and smoking or vaping materials are not allowed inside the grounds.
