Planning a beach vacation is a fun and exciting time. We all love looking for that perfect vacation home, picking the dates, planning activities and of course, dreaming of those sun-drenched days on the beach. However, there are a few mistakes that we see folks make when planning (and during their vacation) that could be avoided. Here are ten vacation mistakes that you might be making.

Not trying new things
The beach is a great place to kick off your Ocean Isle Beach vacation, but there is so much more to the area than the beach. There are local day-trips to places like Bald Head Island. There are fishing charters, kayak trips, and surf lessons. Maybe you want to rent some bikes and ride around the island. No matter what you might like to try, it is a big mistake to not venture out and check off a few items on your bucket list.
Over planning your trip
Planning is a good thing, but over planning is a terrible idea. We all have busy schedules, and often, our days are busier than we would like. We run from one obligation to the next. During your Ocean Isle Beach vacationleave some space open for an unexpected adventure, day-trip or even just that occasional rainy day that might pop up.
Skipping the local cuisine
When visiting any new vacation destination it is a huge mistake not to try the local cuisine. Sure, we all like the safe and predictable nature of chain restaurants, but – when in Rome! When you visit Ocean Isle Beach, take a step out of your comfort zone and check out the local restaurants. We have some of the best and freshest seafood on the Carolina coast. Local shrimp is especially popular.
Forgetting to purchase travel insurance
There are a lot of things you can forget and still have a great vacation, but Travel Insurance isn’t one of those things. Travel Insurance is the only way to ensure that your vacation is fully protected in the event of an unexpected loss, illness, or emergency. Travel insurance is relatively inexpensive and covers so much more than just a Hurricane evacuation. Want to know more about travel insurance? Not traveling during shoulder seasons
Ocean Isle Beach is certainly a great place for a summer beach vacation. However, if you are looking for a great deal (or just can’t fit a summer vacation into your schedule), you should look into the “shoulder seasons”. Shouldner season is defined as the time between the most popular tourist season (summer) and spring or fall. Early spring and late fall still offer beautiful weather, great values and no crowds, making them the perfect times to explore Ocean Isle Beach.
Posting too much on Social Media
We all love our social media platforms, but did you know that thieves love them too? That’s right – it is not a great idea to post your vacation plans on your social media. It is also not a great idea to post things during your vacation. This applies to the kids as well. Wait till your return home to post new pictures and adventures to your social media.
Not having a budget
Any vacation is a large investment for most families. Creating a budget is a great way to make sure you don’t overspend, get to see the things you want to see, and have a stress free vacation. By budgeting in advance, you won’t have to worry about money or surprise expenses. Forgetting important medications
Vacation is no time to be frantically looking for a prescription refill. Sure, we have urgent cares in the area and great local hospitals, but who wants to be spending time dealing with a forgotten prescription while on vacation? Whether it is extra contact lenses, an inhaler or diabetes supplies, make sure to pack enough (and a little extra) for any unexpected travel delays.
Overpacking
Hey, you are coming to the beach. Casual is the style here. Overpacking is as much a pain as underpacking. Try and think about what you are realistically going to wear during your stay and the types of activities you are going to be doing. Don’t forget – most of our vacation homes feature washers and dryers which makes packing even easier.

Forgetting to call financial institutions
More and more banks are getting really good about spotting things like credit card fraud. The problem is – this can mean that checking in at an unusual destination or buying gas in multiple locations a day can trigger an alert.
Take a few minutes to call your bank and let them know your travel plans. This will help you while you are on the road. Nothing is worse than having a credit or debit card denied when you least expect it.
