Tips for Making the Most of Your Yoga Practice on the Beach

Is there anything as relaxing as a day on the beach? How about bringing your Yoga practice to the beach. We’ve all had a stressful year, few would argue that 2020 has been a year to remember. Now more than ever is a great time to book a beach vacation and as a benefit with most schools going to virtual learning you have even more great dates to choose from. So grab the kids, pack up the laptops, and head to the beach. While the kids are studying mom and dad can head to the beach and relax with these great tips for helping make the most of your Yoga practice.

What you need and don’t need

Most us are used to practicing yoga in a studio or at home. These environments have hard floors and are usually level making them ideal for complicated poses and long sessions. Another advantage of practicing yoga inside is the ability to control the environment. Well this is beach yoga which has all sorts of awesome and rewarding advantages, but there are few things you’ll need to leave behind and a few additional things to need to bring along. Here are a few items you definitely want to bring and a few to leave at home.

1. Sunscreen

Even if you are heading out in the early morning it is important to wear sunscreen. The sun’s rays can be particularly harsh when reflecting off the sand and the water. Try and use a good quality sports oriented sunscreen that will hold up well while you are sweating. Remember it is best to apply the sunscreen inside on cool dry skin about a half our before you head out into the sun.

2. Hydrate, hydrate and hydrate more

A lot of people mistakenly think you don’t sweat during yoga. After all it isn’t like you are running. However, that is the magic of yoga in many ways. Not only does it relax you, but it is also a great workout that stretches muscles and builds bone density among other things.

Doing yoga outside in the North Carolina sun is a lot like doing hot yoga. Hydration is key. remember to always drink lots of water and bring some water for needed breaks during your practice.

3. Forget the yoga mat

One of the best things about beach yoga is you don’t need a mat. In fact a mat will slip and slide all over the place on the beach. The sand is awesome for reasons you’ll see below, but it can wreak havoc on a yoga mat. So leave the mat at home or for indoors on rainy days.

4. Keep it simple

As noted the beach is a more complicated surface compared to a hard indoor surface. Because of this is can make some poses or moves a lot harder. Forget the complicated moves. Keep your practice simple and focus on the fundamentals. The sand will add some work to your work out so there isn’t a worry that it will be too easy.

When and where

Yoga can be done anywhere, but while at the beach there are a few things to remember. The ideal times of day to head to the beach for your Yoga is in the early morning or at sunset. These are good times because the temperatures are lower and there are fewer people on the beach to distract you.

We love the early morning time of day. It is a great way to start your day and besides who doesn’t love an Ocean Isle Beach sunrise.

Three tips to make the most of your practice

1. Let the ocean guide you

The ocean is a beautiful and powerful force. It is also a great way to get in sync with your breathing. Let the sounds of the waves rolling in be the rhythm to your breathing practice.

2. No food

You don’t want to practice yoga on a full stomach, in fast a fasted yoga session is by far the one that offers the best benefits. Forget the heavy breakfast, get your work out in first.

3. Let the sand guide you

The sand is a great way to practice yoga. You’ll find that you use more stabilization muscles when on the beach. Take advantage of this to practice holding poses longer than normal. You’ll quickly feel the differences.
